Nowadays, SSD is slowly replacing the majority of hard disk drives. Recently,  GALAXY technology exhibited their newly  developed ONE 8TB SSD  at Flash Memory Summit,  and many people predict that we will no longer need mechanical hard drive. You may check this post for more information.

With the appearance of ONE 8TB SSD , many people predict that we will no longer need mechanical hard drive as SSD is a clear winner when compared with Hard Disk Drive (HDD) .

An SSD (Solid State Drive) is a type of data storage device, similar to a Hard Disk Drive. Currently the worldwide market share of HDD and SSD is 45% and 55%, respectively, but there are some key differences between the two devices. While an HDD stores and retrieves digital information using rotating disks coated with magnetic material, an SSD uses semiconductor flash memory to store data.

SSD has many advantages over HDD. For instance, SSD provides better performance and reliability over an HDD. As a result, SSD is slowly replacing the majority of hard disk drives. And many Windows users have already upgraded their HDD to SSD to improve their computer performance. If you find your computer runs very slowly, you may also migrate Windows OS to a larger SSD .

ONE 8TB SSD with PS3112-S12 Master

On August 9th, 2018, Flash Memory Summit, the world's top flash memory summit was held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Silicon Valley, California. And the main control group, PHISON Electronic Corporation (PHISON Electronic Corporation was established in November 2000 in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Starting with the world's first single-chip USB flash drive control chip, the group has become the leader in control chips such as USB flash drives, SD memory cards, eMMC, UFS, PATA, SATA and PCIe solid state disks.) exhibited its latest consumer-grade master PS3112-S12 with capacity support, amazingly up to 8TB! At the same time, the ONE 8TB SSD with PS3112-S12 master developed by the strategic partner GALAXY is also showing up.

PS3112-S12 is an 8-channel master that is suitable for SATA and SSD. It supports 3D NAND Flash. The continuous read and write speeds are 560MB/s and 530MB/s respectively, which is close to the speed limit of SATA interface.

In addition, it also has core processor, second-generation LDPC code error correction, solid-state signature authentication and other unique black technology, which can further improve the security of data reading and writing while ensuring SSD performance.

8TB of capacity support has become the biggest highlight of the S12 master. In the past, large-capacity SSDs were difficult to develop and popularized. On the one hand, the prices are very high. On the other hand, the lack of support for large-capacity parity controls also hindered their popularity.

As a consumer-level master, the new PS3112-S12 is expected to give SSD the best balance between capacity and price.

Now, this desire is about to be realized with the appearance of ONE 8TB SSD engineering sample.

The ONE 8TB SSD is an engineering sample with 16 Toshiba 3D flash granules, a single capacity of 512GB, and SK Hynix cache.

It is reported that in addition to 8TB, the ONE series of GALAXY will also launch 4TB, 2TB, 1TB and other versions. It covers a large, medium and small capacity, fully satisfying users' demand for different capacities.

As the only strategic partner of PHISON Electronic Corporation in the mainland of China, GALAXY Technology has actively cooperated with PHISON Electronic Corporation to carry out the exchange and cooperation of new SSD technologies.

This move is expected to bring a certain boost to the development of large-capacity SSDs. And I believe that in the future, large-capacity SSDs will become more and more popular, and prices will be affordable to more and more ordinary people. Gradually large-capacity SSDs will take place of mechanical hard drives. If the ONE 8TB/4TB SSD is finally in mass production, we may be able to say goodbye to the slow and bloated mechanical hard drive very soon.
